Autumn Series #2 - Tartan

Tartan print is back, but not in its traditional Highland way. This fall be prepared to explore a modernised version of the classic pattern with the release of unconventional, abstract and grunge inspired colours and sizes. Masculine lines and tailored fits are the style agenda of the season with designers creating boyish combinations for the runway. This means endless fun coming up with both polished and bold looks to suit your own style.

In the second series of my Autumn themed blog I want to generate my own individual signature by mixing current trends with my own little additions. I love the warm, homely affiliations that the more traditional tartan patterns bring out, so you'll see that I prefer adding smaller tartan details to much softer outfits like the portrait below.

1. Tailoring

For the daring of us, this fitted, masculine two piece suit fully printed in Prince of Wales ticks all the boxes for this seasons trends. This is perfect for an after work date with its sharp, edgy and fearless aura bound to get you a second date. The added leather vest finishes the look with that grungy touch that everyone is after this season.

For a more toned down, yet striking look, go for some ankle length, bold printed trousers and match this up with solid coloured top or jumper. For a date night, black peep toe platforms are imperative. But for a more casual. practical outfit this will look equally good paired with some simple, sparkly pumps.

2. Retro Revival

We are seeing designers look back for retro inspired combinations like the one below. This consists of pairing slim-fit, cigarette trousers together with cosy knit tops and shortened cardigans. Neutral colours and thick textures will work best to keep the tone sophisticated and expensive.

3. Grungy

Layering a tartan shirt under heavy layers or even knotting a tartan shirt around the waist will give you that signature grunge touch. Go for oversized eyeliner and tousled, loose hair to finish and if you really want to stand out a pair of ray-bans will do the job.

Give a tartan dress a grungy, rebellious edge by pairing with Dr Marten's or some thickset motorcycle boots. If going for the latter option, sheer tights, as shown below, will elongate your legs and add some contrast.

4. Vibrant skirts

The key is to contrast a busy, patchwork skirt with a matching plain top. Go for a colour which is featured on the skirt to please the eye. Extra details like zips or asymmetric hems will also make all the difference in stamping your outfit with your own unique style.

5. The Classic Scarf

When the colder months hit, my go to piece has to be my thick, tartan scarf that I got from Zara a few years ago. It just looks super cosy and inviting and I can bury myself in it to keep myself warm. They are a timeless classic so shops will definitely stock them each year. Search for a thicker, softer, woolen scarf of a better quality, it'll definitely be worth the extra money.
